As such, our goals are:
Inducing and developing research in the Applied Sciences focusing on solving the problems faced by the society.
Effective application and integration of up-to-date and appropriate technology in all endeavours.
Exploration of new frontiers, diversifying and expanding.
Contributing to human resource/s development in the region (via academic and extension programs).
Despite the high goals and stringent targets we are also a very open-minded institution, where we provide a very friendly atmosphere to the students to interact (amongst themselves, with the academics and the society at large) and develop their skills as per their interests and aptitudes through the venue of projects focusing on the application of science to solve socio-environmental issues. There�s no doubt that this highly dynamic and academically fertile learning environment enables our students to develop into high profile professionals who will be contributing to the development of this region and country.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE

he Department of Physical Science of the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna came into existence with the commencement of the Faculty of Applied Science in 1997. Since then the department has developed the academic programs in Applied Mathematics, Computing and Information Technology, with the revisions of the syllabi in regular intervals, and improvements of the laboratory facilities. Department has four disciplines namely Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics and Physics. The major commitment of the department is to provide up to date knowledge in Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology and Physics to undergraduate students through course work, practical classes and research projects. The department has facilities to offer B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics and Computing (four-year course) and BICT (four-year course) degrees to undergraduates. Department also intent to start degree programmes in B.Sc. in Applied Physics and Computing (three-year course) and B.Sc. Special (Physics) and B.Sc. Special (Computing) in year 2008. In addition to teaching, staff members are actively involved in a number of research projects in their respective field of study.

DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE


The Department of Biological Science is one of the Departments in faculty of Applied Science of Vavuniya campus of the University of Jaffna, commenced in 1997. The academic program has been developed in Environmental Science. The Syllabi has been drafted with different courses in Environmental Science and Biological Science with emphasis on fields of technological importance. The major objective of the Department is to train the undergraduates to suite the latest trends in industry, research and development of national economy through course work, practical classes and research projects. The department has facilities to offer B. Sc in Environmental Science (four year course) to undergraduates. The department has a future plan to develop a degree course in Applied Chemistry and Food Science Technology. The staff members also do the research work in their respective fields.
